Richard Edward "Eddy" Arnold (May 15, 1918 - May 8, 2008) was an American country music singer who performed for six decades. He was a so-called Nashville sound (country/popular music) innovator of the late 1950s, and scored 147 songs on the Billboard country music charts, second only to George Jones. He sold more than 85 million records. A member of the Grand Ole Opry (beginning 1943) and the Country Music Hall of Fame (beginning 1966), Arnold ranked 22nd on Country Music...

Some Kind Of Satisfaction - File Fill That Hammer Guy Ted de Corsia - 1954 An episode of That Hammer Guy with Ted de Corsia, not found in the other collections on Internet Archive.  The sound quality is a bit rough (as is the lead character), roughly on par with the other episodes available on IA.  The story, characters, and acting are all very satisfying; the story is complete, but the show's wrap-up is missing. This series debuted on the Mutual network on January 6 1953 and ran until...

Curtain - File Fill The Whistler August 16, 1953 An episode of The Whistler not currently found in the OTRR collection. Like most Whistler episodes of this era, this is a rather subdued tale concentrating on the motives and modus operandi of the central character, rather than an over-the-top story of violence.  In that context, Curtain is a very satisfying listen. Bill Forman plays The Whister, and featured in the cast are Lamont Johnson, Frances Robinson, Eddie Marr, and Bob Bruce, in a story...

Murder At Midnight: The Radio Show ~ Introduction To Old-Time Radio ~ Midnight, the witching hour when the night is darkest, our fears the strongest, and our strength at its lowest ebb. Midnight, when the graves gape open, and death strikes! Murder At Midnight is one of the best arguments for exploring the lesser-known series of old-time radio.  While not one of today's best-known shows, nor a title that often comes up in discussions of OTR, it is an imaginative and varied program produced by...

Devolution Murder At Midnight -  The Ape Song Raymond Edward Johnson, Ruth Yorke, Brad Barker Man and Ape.  What really separates us?  Is it our civilized behaviour, our tacit commitment to the rights of our fellow human beings, and a collective striving for the advancement of culture through science, philosophy, and the arts? Or is it just the thumbs? The Ape Song makes a strong case for the latter theory.  Despite the quaint Darwinian notion that we, as a species, have evolved to a higher...

THE RAILROAD HOUR Background of The Railroad Hour The series was sponsored by the Association of American Railroads. It featured highly condensed versions of popular musicals and operettas from old favorites, like Victor Herbert's Naughty Marietta to more contemporary hits such as Rodgers and Hammersteinâs State Fair . Since the show was produced for NBCâs "Night of Music, " it should come as no surprise that the plotline sometimes came second to the music. One reviewer noted that...

STRANGE WILLS Strange Wills was a radio program syndicated in 1946. It was produced in Hollywood by Charles Michelson and Teleways Syndication. Stage and film star Warren William, who starred in the show, was also part of the creative team. The stories were said to be based on actual wills, with the names of those involved changed. The stories themselves were compiled by lawyer-turned-author Ken Krippene from his research over a ten-year period. These shows were quite different from other...

WORDS AT WAR Words at War was a 30 minute dramatic anthology series dealing with stories condensed from books written about World War II. The series started in the middle of the war and at the most crucial time of the war for the allies, somewhat heightening its debut. Not only that, it was supported by Johnson's Wax in the Fibber McGee and Molly time slot as Jim and Marian Jordan went on vacation. And if that wasn't enough, the music for the series was done by NBC's own Frank Black, a master...

THE MAN CALLED X Beginning in the summer of 1944, at the height of World War II, The Man Called X was originally a kind of "FBI" program. The series soon developed a more international approach, however, featuring danger, intrigue, and romance in exotic settings. On any given Saturday or Sunday evening, Wendell Niles would say, "Wherever there is mystery, intrigue, romance, in all the strange and mysterious places of the world, there you will find "The Man Called X."...

PAT NOVAK, FOR HIRE Pat Novak, for Hire , is an old-time radio detective drama series which originally aired from 1946-1948, and revived in 1949. It started as a West Coast regional produced program at KGO in San Francisco. This regional version originally starred Jack Webb in the title role, with scripts by his roommate Richard L. Breen. This is a "missing" May 30, 1948 episode “The Prisoner of Zenda Caper.” It is from a home disc recording. The episode is missing its show open and close, and has a short gap for the 'disc flip' at about 11m20s. The story is complete except for a little of Sam's opening dialogue and that very short gap. The recording is 21 minutes long and has Wildroot commercials. There is some hum and other issues (like limited range) but the processing has made it listenable. This is the only...

Jeff Regan, Investigator ~ Introduction To Old-Time Radio ~ Jack Webb (1948), Frank Graham (1949-1950) Violent. Insubordinate. Caustic. Hair-triggered. Not words that one normally associates with Jack Webb, if one only knows him as the straight-laced Joe Friday of Dragnet, but if you don't know Jeff Regan, Investigator, you don't know Jack. Jeff Regan is chief investigator for International Detective Agency, an agency owned by Anthony J. Lyon (hence the series often being referred to as 'The...

Raymond Chandler  -  The Adventures Of Philip Marlowe: The Radio Show ~ Introduction To Old-Time Radio ~ Raymond Chandler (pictured above, the creator of Philip Marlowe), speaking on the realistic detective of fiction, in excerpts from his 1944 essay 'The Simple Art Of Murder':  "He must be a complete man and a common man and yet an unusual man ... He must be the best man in his world and a good enough man for any world ... He is neither a eunuch nor a satyr; I think he might seduce a...

"Ill blows the wind that profits nobody" Adventures Of Philip Marlowe - Red Wind September 26, 1948 There was a desert wind blowing that night.  It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch.  On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight.  Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks.  Anything can happen.  You can even get a full...

N8ive Radio, 1949 Adventures Of Philip Marlowe - The Indian Giver August 13, 1949 In the 1930s, America needed scapegoats.  After the Wall Street crash of 1929, the citizenry circled the wagons, and anyone who was not part of the dominant culture was seen as suspect. Within the European diaspora, there was mistrust of the more recent waves of immigrants, such as the Italians who had come to America in large numbers less than a generation earlier.  Even within America itself, there was...

"Stop, Pops; He's Going To Fling It!" Adventures Of Philip Marlowe - The Monkey's Uncle March 7, 1950 Yes, we all know the simian's first line of defence.  Philip Marlowe may be a tough guy's tough guy, but when faced with a chimpanzee who starts to fling what a chimpanzee is known to fling, well, no one is that tough.  (As you may be starting to suspect, this is a lighter-hearted episode with much humour accompanying the mystery.) As it turns out, Cornelius, the pooh-flinging...

HORATIO HORNBLOWER The Horatio Hornblower series is based upon the novels by C. S. Forester. They were admired by many fans, including Winston Churchill and Ernest Hemmingway who is quoted as saying, “I recommend Forester to everyone literate I know.” The adventures follow the rising career from a young, unpromising, and seasick midshipman who eventually becomes Admiral of The Fleet of the Britain's Royal Navy. The storyline occurs during the Napoleonic era. Although many great naval...

The Greatest Sorrow The Adventures Of Philip Marlowe - The Hiding Place  May 9, 1950 It is said that there is no greater sorrow than when a parent outlives their child.  Rose Kennedy, matriarch of America's first family of politics in the mid-twentieth century, lived to see four of her children perish, two at the hands of assassins: "It has been said time heals all wounds. I do not agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind protecting its sanity covers them with scar tissue and the pain...

Jack Benny: The Radio Show ~ Introduction To Old-Time Radio ~ Mister Radio.  Original 'King Of All Media'.  The world's oldest 39-year-old.  Possibly the person most associated with the golden age of radio is Jack Benny. Jack Benny, born Benjamin Kubelsky in 1894, grew up in Waukegan, Illinois, the town he made famous in countless routines.  At age six he began studying the violin, and in 1911, at age 17, Benny began his career playing the violin on the vaudeville stage.  His violin would...

Mrs. Bogart! The Lucky Strike Program - Guests Bacall & Bogart January 5th, 1947 Jack Benny is, of course, the perfect gentleman.  He would never take lightly the sanctity of marriage.  Every man, however, has something deep in their psyche (call it vanity) that drives him to prove, if only to himself, that he can still play the Lothario should the need arise. With Lauren Bacall dropping by the Benny house to rehearse her part in an upcoming Jack Benny Show, Jack goes into action.  To...

Never Trust A Mysterious Stranger The Lucky Strike Program - I Stand Condemned January 19th, 1947 Apparently, Jack Benny had never heard the Inner Sanctum Mysteries episode Death Bound, or he would have known better than to trust a mysterious stranger who asks for a light.  Complicating matters is the fact that this mysterious stranger, who looks just like Boris Karloff, is Boris Karloff. Boris Karloff was the star of many Inner Sanctum episodes in the '40s and '50s, and on The Jack Benny Show...
